City Cycle Subscriptions Kick-off

01 October, 2010

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman today announced subscriptions to CityCycle, Brisbane’s new world class public bike hire scheme, are now open.

Cr Newman said the opportunity for residents to sign up for the scheme was the first step to using the active, affordable and sustainable public transport option which will be available from 1 October.

“CityCycle introduces a brand new mode of public transport to Brisbane, the first since CityCat ferries were brought in in 1996,” he said.

Cr Newman said the scheme would be the cheapest public transport option available in Brisbane.

“Once they’ve subscribed, users can hire bikes for up to 30 minutes at a time at no additional cost. For annual subscribers this could mean users would pay as little as 17 cents a day to make short trips around the city.”

Subscriptions are now available at www.citycycle.com.au and Brisbane residents can choose from an annual ($60.50) or quarterly ($27.50) subscription. Casual ($11) subscriptions will also be available from mid-September.

Big business has already embraced the CityCycle initiative with about 20 large employers confirmed as corporate supporters, representing more than 25,000 inner-city workers from companies such as Flight Centre, BoQ and RBS Morgan.

CityCycle is part of Council's committment to deliver $100 million in new bikeway infrastructure over four years and part of the plan for moving Brisbane forward and reducing congestion.

Once complete, CityCycle will offer up to 2000 bikes at 150 stations from Newstead to St Lucia. Visit www.citycycle.com.au to subscribe or for more information contact Council on 3403 8888.
