City Hall open for event bookings for 2013

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk today announced the $215 million City Hall restoration project was on track and bookings were being received for events in 2013.

More than 50 bookings have been received for wedding receptions, school speech nights, gala dinners, exhibitions, concerts, community events, Christmas parties and New Year’s Eve events.

“We are getting on with the job of fixing this iconic heritage building and delivering it back to the people of Brisbane with modern building and safety standards,” Cr Quirk said.

“It is pleasing to see the project really taking shape now with 50 per cent of the original, locally sourced timber flooring that was removed and restored now being reinstated into the rooms.

“Work in the main auditorium continues to progress with birdcage scaffolding recently erected in the auditorium in preparation for painting and the installation of lighting in the ceiling.

“It’s fantastic to see so many unused spaces such as the Old Library being restored and available as function rooms so more people can use City Hall.”

Cr Quirk said the restored City Hall would feature 12 function spaces that could house up to 1500 people with modern facilities.

He said an additional 1,429 sq m of previously underutilised space had been used for new function areas. Construction work was 44 per cent and some rooms would be completed later this year.

Spotless Facility Services Pty Ltd was last week appointed as the first external venue operator for City Hall with a 20 year contract to run functions when City Hall reopens for public events early in 2013. Spotless will handle all event operations including sales, marketing, coordination and delivery of conferences, major events, concerts and weddings.

“Council’s financial contribution towards the successful operations and maintenance of City Hall is expected to be significantly reduced through the use of an external operator,” he said.

“The operator will be able to cater for events ‘in-house’ from a 1,200-meal per day commercial kitchen located in the basement allowing meals to be cooked inside City Hall for the first time.”

The venues will continue to be available for hire by commercial and private sectors and members of the community. The operator will also be required to maintain broad community access to City Hall.

City Hall will remain the ‘People’s Place’ with community groups such as Red Cross, 50+ Club and Combined Charities Card Shop all returning to City Hall once the restoration is completed.
